Ramesh Charan Basu Majumdar
Lathi-khela
Collection: Malini Bhattacharya
A postcard written to Ramesh Charan by Nandalal from Linton Street, Entally, Calcutta dated 1918, allows us to place this sketch around then, at a time when Ramesh Charan was a part of the art circles of Abanindranath Tagore and his team at the Bichitra Club and Society of Oriental Art in Calcutta.
“I have quite liked this sketch, except that the lathi at the back is too thin ... it should be double its size. Reduce the space above the head of the garib proja [perhaps the figure on the left]. The composition is good. I will show it to Abanbabu and Asitbabu [Abanindranath Tagore and Asit Haldar] and will write to you about what they say.”
